When it comes to finding your next role, you need to make sure you work with the right recruitment partner. However, this can be easier said than done.

A recent study by analytics company ComRes revealed that the UK recruitment industry employs around 115,000 people, most of which work within the 40,000 recruitment agencies registered in the UK today. With so many agencies, large and small, all with varied approaches and specialisms, it can be challenging to determine which one is right for you.

Here, the PRS team looks at how you can avoid working with the wrong one and ensure you select a partner who will enrich your career and find you a job in line with your skills, experience and aspirations.

Rapid Response

A healthy flow of information from day one is crucial for a great candidate/recruiter relationship. Ideally, as soon as you register your CV or interest in a role with a recruiter, they should be in touch to find out more about you. If you hear nothing within the first 24-48 hours, move on.

It’s always the best policy, especially in recruitment. Listen, this is your career we’re talking about, and you don’t have time for a recruiter’s lip service. Listen out for honest feedback from a recruiter, whether that’s recommendations on improving your CV, enquiries into your experience, or a straight-up “Sorry, I don’t think you’re right for this role”.

Knowledge & Experience

Pay close attention to the roles that a recruiter has on their website. Do they specialise in a particular area? Think about it, if a recruiter is a specialist and has expert knowledge in a specific area, the chances are they’ll be working with leading employers in this field. Additionally, a specialist recruiter is likely to have a better understanding of your skillset too, so should never recommend unsuitable roles. PRS, for example, only recruits for positions in the property and built environment sectors, and has many years of experience doing so.

Industry Recognition

We’ve just told you that PRS are experts in property and built environment, but how do you know that’s true? Don’t take their word for it. Go a step further and check their website for proof of industry accreditations, partnerships and awards that back up their claims. To prove a point, our certificates include REC, IS0 9001 and Safe Contractor. Additionally, we’re members of BIFM and a founding member of the Building Services Engineering Employment Agency Alliance.

Always Remember...

This is your career, and you shouldn’t waste time and effort working with the wrong recruiter for your needs. Don’t be afraid to challenge them and certainly don’t hesitate to walk away if things don’t feel right.
