Authorising Engineer
Location: Hybrid – home-based with national travel across a portfolio of 80 UK sites
Salary: £75,000 – £85,000 + £5,000 Car Allowance + Pension + Private Medical Insurance + Package
About the Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen to join a leading facilities engineering company delivering a multi-million-pound national contract for one of the EUs most respected news and media organisations.
The Authorising Engineer will play a pivotal role in providing expert technical assurance, governance, and compliance oversight across a diverse UK portfolio of approximately 80 sites in the UK with broadcast, production, and office sites. This position ensures that all electrical and mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with statutory and legislative standards.
Working on a hybrid basis, the successful candidate will combine home-based responsibilities with regular site visits to audit, assess, and mentor local engineering teams. This is a senior technical position requiring exceptional knowledge of electrical and mechanical infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and risk management within critical, high-profile environments.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Assurance and Governance
- Provide expert technical assurance support across the client’s national estate, ensuring compliance with statutory, industry, and safety standards.
- Conduct comprehensive risk-based audits, producing detailed reports and ensuring corrective actions are identified and implemented.
- Support the Head of Technical Operations and Senior Authorising Engineer (SAE) in delivering consistent, auditable assurance processes.
- Contribute to the development of best practice guidance, technical consultancy, and continuous improvement initiatives.
People and Competency Management
- Develop and maintain the Technical and Safety Competency Management System (CMS) to ensure all Authorised and Competent Persons are suitably trained, assessed, and compliant.
- Provide mentoring, assessment, and professional support to engineering and maintenance personnel.
- Collaborate with other Authorising Engineers to enhance technical standards and promote consistent safety culture across all sites.
Policy and Process Development
- Review and improve Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) to ensure compliance with operational, legal, and safety requirements.
- Maintain technical assurance files, logbooks, and documentation within the Integrated Management System (IMS).
- Develop and distribute technical bulletins, publications, and updates incorporating best practice from leading professional bodies such as IET, CIBSE, and BESA.
- Support the investigation and resolution of technical and safety incidents as required.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Work closely with Technical Assurance, Safety, and Operations teams to drive consistent compliance and assurance delivery.
- Report to the Senior Authorising Engineer, providing independent assurance outputs and recommendations.
- Act as a technical authority for Authorised and Competent Persons across the account.
Person Specification
Essential Experience
- Significant experience as an Authorising Engineer or Authorised Person in electrical and mechanical systems.
- Strong understanding of statutory compliance, technical assurance, and risk management.
- Proven ability to develop, audit, and manage Safe Systems of Work within complex estates.
- Experience of quality and safety management systems (ISO9001 and ISO45001).
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, capable of influencing at senior levels.
- IT proficiency, including Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Smartsheets, and Visio.
- Experience in the media, broadcasting, or similarly critical operational environments (desirable).
Education and Qualifications
- Minimum HND (or equivalent) in an engineering or technical discipline.
- HV/LV Authorised Person and Authorising Engineer qualifications.
- Recognised safety qualification (IOSH, SMSTS, CSCS) or willingness to obtain.
- Ideally holds IEng status (or working towards CEng) via IET, IMECHE, or CIBSE.
- Mechanical AP/AE qualifications and CMI Level 5 Management & Leadership (or equivalent) desirable.
