Role Overview
- The Lead Mechanical Technician is responsible for overseeing the safe, effective delivery of both planned and reactive maintenance activities. This includes work carried out by internal technicians and subcontractors.
- This is a hands-on supervisory position, requiring participation in a shift rota and direct involvement in technical operations as needed. The LMech plays a critical role in upholding technical standards, ensuring safety compliance, and supporting team performance across the site.
Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership
- Deputise for the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required.
- Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out-of-hours technical support.
- Maintain the highest standards of professionalism and technical excellence within the team.
- Ensure all site personnel and contractors follow safe systems of work (RAMS, LOTO, PTW, etc.).
- Maintain valid certifications and site-specific appointments as an Authorised Person (AP).
Maintenance & Engineering
- Oversee and perform maintenance on client mechanical systems and infrastructure.
- Diagnose and repair faults across mechanical systems, escalating issues where necessary.
- Coordinate with the DigiHub/Helpdesk and end users to prioritise and schedule tasks.
- Ensure all works, including subcontractor activities, are completed to engineering standards and industry best practices.
- Support minor project works and perform like-for-like asset replacements as directed.
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Allocate team and contractor resources efficiently to meet deadlines and service standards.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, sustainability, and safety awareness.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and team members.
- Mentor and support the ongoing development of technicians and apprentices.
Reporting & Compliance
- Provide regular updates to the TSS on task progress, resource requirements, and operational issues.
- Ensure all work is documented accurately within the CMMS.
- Adhere to company engineering standards and regulatory compliance at all times.
- Complete all assigned training and maintain technical competencies for the role.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education/Training:
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Valid AP (Authorised Person) certification in relevant systems is desirable. - Experience:
Minimum 5 years of hands-on mechanical maintenance experience, ideally in a critical or high-reliability environment. - Technical Skills:
Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities.
Up-to-date knowledge of engineering standards, statutory requirements, and best practices. - IT Skills:
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). - Professional Attributes:
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage workloads effectively.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
