Job Title: Deputy Shift Leader – Engineering
Reports to: Engineering Services Manager
Department: Engineering Services
Main Purpose of the Role
The Deputy Shift Leader – Engineering is responsible for delivering high-quality Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and emergency response services in line with contractual and operational requirements. The role has a primary focus on electrical systems and includes acting as an Authorised Person (HV) when required, ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of electrical infrastructure.

This role requires strong technical capability, effective leadership behaviours, and a proactive, solutions-focused approach. The Deputy Shift Leader plays a key role in maintaining service excellence, supporting the site team, and building trusted relationships with clients and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
1. Compliance & Technical Operations
Carry out PPM tasks in accordance with maintenance schedules and industry standards
Ensure engineering best practices are followed to maximise system reliability and plant performance
Maintain full compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) and site-specific policies
Accurately complete all maintenance records, reports, and Quality Assurance documentation
Respond promptly to electrical reactive maintenance tasks and service desk requests
2. Fault Diagnosis & Minor Works
Diagnose and rectify faults across electrical systems and associated components
Undertake minor installation works and system upgrades as required
Maintain and repair lighting systems and electrical distribution infrastructure
Support technical surveys and provide material and cost estimates for minor works
3. Coordination & Operational Support
Act as a first point of contact for client maintenance queries, escalating issues where appropriate
Supervise visiting subcontractors, ensuring safe working practices and high-quality delivery
Review, implement, and maintain Safe Systems of Work, including SOPs and electrical switching schedules
Support coordination of engineering cover across nearby sites to ensure service continuity
4. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
Maintain strict adherence to company and site Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies
Ensure appropriate PPE is worn, maintained, and used correctly at all times
Participate in incident and accident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions
Support internal and external HSE audits
Review and update Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) regularly
Promote a zero-accident culture and actively support HSE initiatives led by management
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Electrical Apprenticeship (or equivalent) within the building maintenance or facilities industry
City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 (Electrical Installation) or equivalent
17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (or 18th Edition if updated)
Strong working knowledge of building services systems (electrical and mechanical)
Proven experience delivering PPM, fault diagnosis, reactive repairs, and testing/inspection
Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and best practice in maintenance environments
Strong organisational, communication, and teamwork skills
Desirable:
City & Guilds 2360 Part 3 (or equivalent)
HV Authorised Person status or experience working under Permit to Work systems
Experience in critical, multi-site, banking, or data centre environments
Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS)
Working knowledge of UPS systems, emergency power, and standby generation
PASMA and/or IPAF certification
Strong IT literacy, including MS Office and CAFM/PPM systems
Supervisory or team leadership experience, or a clear ambition to progress into leadership roles
Working Hours
Based on a defined shift pattern aligned with site operational requirements
Flexibility required to support shift cover, call-outs, and overtime as needed
All working hours and overtime will comply with the Working Time Directive
