Data Centre Technician (Critical Infrastructure / Electrical & Mechanical)

Overview We are looking for a Data Centre Technician to join a high-performing operations team in a mission-critical data centre environment in Docklands, London.

This is a hands-on engineering role ideal for candidates with experience in data centres, critical environments, or building services (electrical/mechanical).

You will be responsible for maintaining uptime, resilience, and operational performance across critical infrastructure including UPS systems, generators, HVAC, and BMS-controlled environments.
Key Responsibilities Operations & Incident Response

  • Respond to critical alarms, faults, and system alerts within a live data centre environment
  • Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) to ensure optimal performance
  • Carry out fault finding, diagnostics, and troubleshooting on electrical and mechanical systems
  • Perform switching operations, start-up and shutdown procedures on critical plant (UPS, generators, HVAC)
  • Follow and execute change control procedures and operational documentation
  • Support incident management, emergency response, and client communications

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Deliver Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance in line with SLAs
  • Maintain and optimise critical infrastructure systems for reliability and efficiency
  • Support BMS (Building Management Systems) and EMS monitoring
  • Conduct technical audits, inspections, and compliance checks
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement and energy efficiency initiatives

Compliance, Documentation & Safety

  • Operate within a strict Permit to Work (PTW) system
  • Review RAMS (Risk Assessments & Method Statements)
  • Follow site procedures including SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs
  • Accurately log all work in CMMS / CAFM systems
  • Produce technical reports on asset performance (UPS, batteries, plant systems)
  • Ensure full compliance with health & safety and statutory regulations

Team Collaboration & Development

  • Work closely with Technical Managers, engineers, and shift teams
  • Support and mentor junior engineers and apprentices
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence

Skills & Experience Essential

  • Electrical apprenticeship / NVQ / City & Guilds or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in data centres, critical environments, facilities management, or building services
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Electrical systems (LV/HV)
    • UPS systems & generators
    • HVAC / cooling systems
  • Experience with BMS / EMS systems
  • Proven ability in fault finding and maintenance of critical infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of health & safety compliance
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a live environment

Desirable

  • Experience in mission-critical or high-availability environments
  • Knowledge of cGxP / regulated environments
  • Familiarity with data centre operations and uptime requirements
