Lead Mechanical Technician – Critical / Mission-Critical Environment The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Technician to join a high-performing engineering team within a critical or mission-critical environment.

This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical delivery with team supervision. You will work across complex mechanical and building services systems, playing a key role in ensuring safety, compliance, and operational reliability while supporting site leadership and mentoring engineering staff.

Role Overview As a Lead Mechanical Technician, you will oversee Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and minor project works across critical mechanical infrastructure.

Acting as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required, you will coordinate engineering activities, supervise subcontractors, and ensure all work is completed to the highest technical and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership & Supervision

  • Act as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required
  • Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out-of-hours technical support
  • Promote a strong culture of Health & Safety, professionalism, and technical excellence
  • Ensure compliance with Safe Systems of Work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit to Work (PTW) procedures
  • Operate as Authorised Person (AP) where appointed

Maintenance & Engineering Delivery

  • Oversee and carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive, and emergency maintenance on mechanical systems
  • Diagnose and resolve faults to minimise downtime and operational disruption
  • Coordinate maintenance activities via Helpdesk / CMMS systems and site stakeholders
  • Ensure all work meets engineering standards, statutory requirements, and industry best practice
  • Support minor projects, plant upgrades, and asset replacement programmes

Team & Stakeholder Management

  • Allocate resources and prioritise workloads to meet SLAs and operational demands
  • Supervise and mentor technicians and apprentices, supporting ongoing development
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, contractors, and internal engineering teams
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement

Compliance, Reporting & Systems

  • Provide regular updates to the Technical Services Supervisor, highlighting operational risks and performance issues
  • Accurately record maintenance activities within CMMS / CAFM systems
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and engineering standards
  • Maintain training records and support ongoing technical competency across the team

Essential Requirements Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within mechanical maintenance environments
  • Experience within critical environments, data centres, or high-availability facilities (desirable)
  • Proven experience supervising teams and coordinating maintenance activities

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability across mechanical and HVAC systems
  • Good understanding of statutory compliance, engineering standards, and Safe Systems of Work
  • Experience using CMMS / CAFM systems and Microsoft Office applications
